Free, fabulous and full of good stuff

Why go to the library? Where else can you get free books, newspapers and magazines, language courses, internet access, computer services, films and music, reading groups and weekly children's activities?

These days there's even a 'love your library' loyalty scheme which rewards you every four visits with a "borrow one get one free" voucher for a DVD, CD, video or audio book and the chance to win a book token. If only they served free coffee and cake too…

Here's what you need to know. There are two libraries in St Albans (central and Marshalswick) and a further four in surrounding London Colney, Redbourn, Wheathampstead and Harpenden. A groovy van (the mobile library service) stops in St Albans, Park Street, Chiswell Green and Bricket wood every week (see timetable below).

All branches offer free weekly storytime sessions for under-fives. Some also offer baby rhyme time sessions and chatterbooks reading groups (8-12yrs).

If it's IT services you're after, all the libraries offer internet access and computer facilities including Windows XP, Office 2003 (MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access), Paintshop Pro 7, Publisher 2003 and Front Page 2003. Some also have dual language software.

Facilities for disabled users include wheelchair access and hearing induction loops. The Central, Marshalswick and Harpenden branches have accessible computer facilities.

More information is available from Herts Library Services.
