St Albans Festival - 20 June to 5 July 09

Bringing the district together...

This year's St Albans Festival brought residents and visitors over 140 events during 17 days. Highlights included:

  • Albantide Parade – a giant puppet procession celebrating the city's history and Britain's first martyr
  • Folk at the Festival - when musicians and dancers filled the city centre
  • Larks in the Parks - a free day of outdoor fun and entertainment in six local parks
  • Fuze goes Stateside - celebrating the best of American music with eight live bands
  • Film at the Festival - a chance to see movies on the big screen outdoors
  • The Food and Drink Festival - the ultimate excuse to eat, drink and enjoy

Outdoor Movies - enjoy your favourite films al fresco at the Smallford Campus of Oaklands College. Fri 19 Jun: The Iron Man (12A) at 7.30pm, Sat 20 Jun: Bolt (PG) at 5pm and Mamma Mia (PG) at 8pm, Sun 21 Jun: The Duchess (12A) at 4pm and Slumdog Millionaire (15) at 7.30pm. Tickets £8 (concs available).

St Albans Festival Pilgrimage - giant puppet procession, re-enactment of the execution of St Alban, all-day family and children's activities. Procession starts from Verulamium Park at 10.30am. Festival Eucharist 11.30am, Festival Evensong 4pm at the Abbey. Free.

Sun 21 Jun

Ride4aReason - a cycle ride for the reasonably fit with refreshments provided en route. A choice of 25, 33, 44 and 64-mile fully signed routes. Children over 12 welcome if accompanied by an adult. From 8am at the Woolam Pavilion. Book in advance with Verulam Cycle Club. £7 / concs available.

Wheathampstead Farmers' Market - regular monthly market of fresh local produce. Free.

Tue 23 & Sun 28 Jun

City Vision: A Clash of Old and New - a 90-minute walk with the St Albans Civic Society to find out what's planned for the central area of St Albans. Meet on the steps of the Council Offices near the Alban Arena. Tue 23 - 2.30pm & Sun 28 - 11.30am. Free.

Wicket Brood Border Morris - High energy Morris Dance display outside Ye Olde Fighting Cocks. 8pm. Free.

Literary Dinner: Women In History - Join bestselling historical biographist and fiction writer Alison Weir, with fellow writers Sarah Gristwood and Clare Mulley for a fascinating talk on women who made an impact on history and a formal four-course dinner. At the Abbey from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Tickets £20.

Diaghilev's Ballet Russes - An illustrated talk celebrating Serge Diaghilev who brought together choreographers, composers and artists to produce great ballet. At Trinity United Reformed Church, 7.30pm. Tickets £5 on the door.

Festival Parade and Day of Dance - a colourful procession showcasing the best in folk dance as it weaves its way along St Peters St, Chequer St and the High St. From 10.15am to 5pm. Free.

Festival Ceilidh - join headlining folk ceilidh band Stomp and caller Barry Goodman. No experience necessary, families are welcome. Alban Arena, 7.45-11.30pm. Tickets £9/concs.

Midnight Walk - a ten mile sponsored walk starting at Verulamium Park to raise money for Grove House Hospice. Register at by 22 Jun. Tickets £15.

Harpenden Farmers' Market - over 55 local stall holders on the Lower High Street. From 10am. Free.

Larks in the Parks - an afternoon of family entertainment in six local green spaces. Play with a pedal-powered Scalextric, create your own graffiti artwork, listen to local bands and try street drumming workshops. Locations: Fleetville Recreation Groun; Trestle Arts Base; The Marlborough Club, Sopwell; Roestock Park, Colney Heath; Morris Playing Fields, London Colney; Victoria Playing Field, St Albans. From 12 noon to 5pm. Free.

Cotswold Morris Dancing - the St Albans Morris Men perform at The White Lion (8.15pm) and The Farmer's Boy (9.30pm).

Dance Workshops - enjoy creative dance workshops with greenbeandance at the Town Hall. 4.30pm - 5.30pm 4 - 7yrs, 5.30pm - 6.30pm 8 - 11yrs, 6.30pm - 7.30pm 12 - 16yrs, 8pm - 9pm Adults. Tickets £3.50.

St Michael's Street Folk Evening - dancers replace traffic in St Michael's Street and its four pubs are filled with lovely traditional and contemporary music in a wide range of styles. From 8pm. Free.

Literary Dinner: Children's Authors - Join St Albans Children's Book Group and bestselling children's authors Kevin Crossley Holland, Leander Deeny and Philip Ardagh for dinner at The Abbey from 7pm. Tickets £20.

Sat 4 Jul

St Abans Alive! - enjoy performances from local bands, community groups, schools, DJs and acoustic artists in an informal setting by the Clock Tower from 11.30am to 4pm. Free.

Sun 5 Jul

Fuze Goes Stateside - a day of music to celebrate the Fourth of July on two outdoor stages (Main Stage outside the Town Hall, Community Stage at the Clock Tower). Enjoy the sounds of The Trailer Trash Orchestra (11-11.45am), Lisa Mills (12.15-1pm), The Magnolia Sisters (1.30-2.30pm), Alan Tyler and The Lost Sons of Littlefield (3-4pm), The Cadillac Kings (4.30-5.30pm), Southern Tenant Folk Union (6-7.15pm), Fat 45 (7.45-9pm) and Mariachi Tapatio (throughout the day).
