The SubwaysTHE SUBWAYS are truly one of the most exciting live bands on the current touring circuit, thrilling crowds with their high-octane, explosive rock sound and wild stage performances. Firm European summer festival favorites, they have graced the main stages of over 100 international festivals across 20 countries. Through stage diving, circle pits and crowd surfing, the band are known to lead their fans in orchestrated mayhem as they crash through their thoroughly entertaining set.Back in 2005, with an average age of just 17, Billy, Charlotte and Josh crashed onto the international music scene with their, now cult, debut, gold selling album ‘Young For Eternity’ and rock-club floor filler ‘Rock & Roll Queen’. The NME proclaimed them “The sexiest thing to sweep rock n roll off it’s feet in years!”. Their sophomore album, ‘All Or Nothing’ (2008), was recorded in LA with Nirvana/ Smashing Pumpkins producer Butch Vig and is “Buoyed with emotional heft and supernova guitar riffs, wired around a maturing song craft” (MOJO). The tracks written around the time Billy was battling to save his voice by undergoing surgery to remove polyps from his vocal chords. The ‘Money And Celebrity’ album followed in 2011 with the band working with Blur/Smiths producer Stephen Street on this insanely catchy pop-rock record full of “brilliantly anarchic punk-pop vignettes; each being a big musical finger that sticks it to financial greed, the mediocre mainstream and the fame fetishists” (ROCKSOUND)… such as lead single ‘We Don’t Need Money To Have A Good Time’. Billy Lunn, the band’s lead singer and guitarist notes the new self- titled 4th album is “100% The Subways, it’s all us, we wrote, produced, and mixed the album ourselves.“ The record has been described as “Near-perfect, punk-spirited noise” (KERRANG!) and “On Par with the best things they have ever written… and finds the band energized, focused and battle-ready” (Q MAGAZINE) TICKETS: £20 Adv Ages 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian) Find out more...

  • Wed 03 Nov - Black Marble

    8:00 PM

BLACK MARBLEInfluenced by coldwave, early-'80s synth pop, and the mighty bass playing of New Order's Peter Hook, Black Marble is the project of singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Chris Stewart. When Stewart debuted in 2012 with The Weight Against the Door EP, he remained true to the frosty gloom of his influences, burying his monotone baritone with layers of echo, reverb, and analog synths. As time went on, however, he let more light and warmth into his music, particularly on 2016's It's Immaterial and 2019's Bigger Than Life, both of which reflected his move from Brooklyn to the sunnier climes of Los Angeles.Black Marble's roots go back to the early 2010s, when Stewart began making music on his laptop. When he played his songs for his friends, they liked his songwriting but thought the instrumentation could sound better, so he looked to the scene around him in Brooklyn for inspiration. He found it in Wierd, a dance party that brought in synth-driven acts from around the world (and also spawned the influential label Wierd Records). Stewart was particularly taken with the sound and analog gear of Martial Canterel's Sean McBride (also of Xeno & Oaklander), and started building his own arsenal of vintage synths, including a Juno and a Korg DW-8000. Not long after, he joined up with ex-Team Robespierre member Ty Kube. The duo made their debut in January 2012 with The Weight Against the Door, an EP released by the Seattle label Hardly Art that introduced Black Marble's faithful update of coldwave's stark-yet-murky, bleak-yet-beautiful sound. That September, their first full-length A Different Arrangement appeared on the label and presented a slightly warmer and more melodic version of their style.Following the release of A Different Arrangement, Stewart began to tire of living in New York. He planned a move to Los Angeles, but wanted to finish Black Marble's second album before he left. During this time, Kube departed and Stewart was hospitalized with a serious case of pneumonia. These personal and physical changes were echoed on It's Immaterial, a lighter and clearer-sounding set of songs that Ghostly International released in October 2016. After settling in L.A., Stewart began work on his third album. Moved by the landscapes as well as the sense of community in his new home, he wrote more immediate songs that brought his voice front and center. In October 2019, Sacred Bones released Bigger Than Life. The following August, Black Marble issued I Must Be Living Twice, an EP of songs originally by Wire, Robert Palmer, and Grouper that were favorites at the band's showsTICKETS: £14 Adv / £16 Door (subject to availability) Ages 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian) Find out more...

Chubby & The Gang West London five-piece Chubby and the Gang are balanced by two energies – a casual “fuck it” on one side, an active “fuck off” on the other. For every moment of punk imperfection, there’s an intricate flurry of detail.  Made up of musicians from across the consistently thriving and criminally overlooked UK hardcore scene (ft. The Chisel, Big Cheese and more), Chubby and the Gang marinate its characteristic speed and sick-of-it-all energy in a mixture of 50s pop sounds. The result is a prickly take on the older, more melodic genres that punk derives from, chewing them up and spitting them out into something mangled but revitalised. Through sheer force of strength, their debut album Speed Kills pummelled its way out of the local hardcore scene and across the Atlantic, where it was met with a landslide of critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork and Rolling Stone. • Tue 09 Nov - Declan Welsh & The Decadent West

    8:00 PM

Declan Welsh & The Decadent WestDeclan Welsh is a songwriter and poet from Glasgow. With his band, The Decadent West they create music that is unapologetic, direct and with a message of humanity. With performances in Palestine (as part of a Glaswegian cultural exchange), The Great Escape and London Fashion Week under their belt in the last year, Welsh and his band are ready to take the next by storm.Out June 1st, the Glaswegian outfit’s debut EP ‘All My Dreams Are Dull’ offers a snapshot into the mind of the young poet as he he muses about the banality of modern living as his band charge through anthemic rock songs drenched in chorus and filled with youthful energy. From the nihilistic, festival ready lead single ‘Lull’ to the Serge Gainsbourg indebted ‘Do What You Want’, Welsh explores themes of sexual liberation and toxic masculinity, with anti-fascist live favourites ‘Nazi Boys’ and ‘No Pasaran’ seeing him at his most scathing, unapologetically expressing his intolerance of the intolerant. ‘Rare is it these days to find someone which you can foresee people actually making an emotional investment in. Declan Welsh is, by all accounts, one such individual.’ - The Line Of Best Fit'Artists with genuine integrity and something relevant to say, Welsh and band are a must see.' - The Scotsman'...there’s an immense sense of pride for the musician who’s become integral to the scene in Scotland using music to make the world a better place.' - Tenement TV TICKETS: £6 Adv / £8 Door (subject to availability)Ages 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian) Find out more...

Ren Harvieu British vocalist Ren Harvieu is a darkly enigmatic singer with a supple, yearning voice and a bent toward mixing '60s pop, soul, and modern alt-rock. Her full-length debut, 2012's Through the Night, reached the Top Five in the U.K. Her second album, 2020's Revel in the Drama, was co-penned by the Magic Numbers' Romeo Stodart. Born Lauren Maria Harvieu in Broughton, Salford, in the County of Lancashire in 1991, Harvieu was introduced to Irish folk songs and traditional music by her guitarist/vocalist father. In her teens, she fell under the influence of an array of artists, including Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez as well as local heroes the Smiths and even such contemporary artists as Alicia Keys. While in sixth form college, she performed in musical theater and entered several talent competitions before uploading some of her own recordings to social media. The tracks caught the ear of music manager Paul Harrison, who brought Harvieu to London to begin work on an album. In 2011, she released the single "Through the Night" and was brought to wider attention touring with Glasvegas. Harvieu was set to play Glastonbury and collaborate with rapper Nas when a freak accident left her hospitalized with two broken vertebrae. After surgery and two months of healing and physical therapy, she recovered and was able to walk again. Her delayed full-length debut followed on Island in May 2012 and went to number five on the U.K. album chart. Harvieu made appearances on Robbie Williams' 2013 album Swings Both Ways and on the 2014 Ed Harcourt B-side "Sweet Malaise" before teaming up with Romeo Stodart to write material for her second studio album. She eventually signed with Bella Union, which issued the resulting Revel in the Drama in 2020. ~ Matt CollarTICKETS: £14 Adv / £16 Door (subject to availability)Ages 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian)Tickets may be available on the door but we strongly advise you purchase them in advance to avoid disappointment Find out more...

    8:00 PM

Hayseed DixieHayseed Dixie was formed in the summer of 2000 on the front porch of a cabin in the Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee, when after drinking enough whiskey to float a battleship across the Sahara Desert, it became suddenly obvious to the boys that the "Lost Highway" of Hank Williams and the "Highway To Hell" of AC/DC were the same damned road. The rest of the world first got a taste of the boys on April 17, 2001 with the release of their first album, titled "A Hillbilly Tribute To AC/DC".The band has since gone on to record 13 further albums containing both original songs and reinterpretations of previously known works, albeit in their own inimitable style. Having sold over half a million albums worldwide and having played more than 1,000 live shows on every continent except Antarctica, Hayseed Dixie are acknowledged as the creators of the musical genre "Rockgrass."TICKETS: £18.50 Advance (subject to availability)Ages 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian)Tickets may be available on the door but we strongly advise you purchase them in advance to avoid disappointment Find out more...

Emily Capell Emily Capell is a singer/songwriter from North West London with a story or ten to share. Raised on a diet of Johnny Cash, The Clash, The Smiths, Mod culture and the top 40, Emily's approach to song writing is eclectic. Featuring a mixture of blues, indie, pop and punk. Her musical stylings draw from a pool deep and wide and is affectionately described as sounding like the adopted daughter of Jamie T and Billy Bragg, and a distant relative of The Clash and The Libertines. She tells Blues inflected indie pop tales of life's frustrations and elations. Whether she's railing against the wrongs of the world, getting a little frisky or inventing a new dance craze Emily will pull you in and spin you round so quickly you'll wonder why you ever bothered with dull generic boys with guitars.Emily states "I wouldn't do music if it wasn't for Joe Strummer, Joe was one of a kind in his song writing, performing and way of life. He could do all genres: rock, reggae, rap, ska, country, punk, everything! He never sold out either. His last gig was a benefit gig for the fire fighters, he wasn't interested in money he was interested in music and people. Joe was the last true rock star, the definition of a legend. RIP my hero Joe!"Emily has had her tracks played on stations including BBC 6Music, Radio X and BBC London. She has performed live at a multitude of venues and festivals across the country. And very recently Emily was asked to perform for HRH Prince Charles at 100 Club with press from all over the world in attendance.Emily's album Combat Frock was released on 5th October 2019. It is an eclectic mix of Ska, Reggae, Punk, with a drop of a Johnny Cash vibe too. The latter is assuredly the case with Penelope Isles, a brother-sister-centred alt-rock quartet from Brighton (via Isle of Man) whose debut album, Until the Tide Creeps In, was released through Bella Union last summer. Formed around the chemistry between dual songwriters Jack and Lily Wolter, the quartet’s expansive DIY mix of translucent dream-pop, fuzz-rock guitars and indie-psych flushes comes lovingly dipped in exquisite harmonies and lustrous melodies: a combination so intuitive, you’d think it was in their blood. Porridge Radio *** MERCURY PRIZE 2020 NOMINEE *** Beginning as Dana Margolin’s sadcore bedroom project, Porridge Radio developed into an idiosyncratic post-punk 4-piece after she moved to Brighton and met her future bandmates. They inelegantly knot together Margolin's vicious, furious emotional outpourings with beautiful pop melodies, and have shared stages with the likes of Soccer Mommy, Alex G, Cherry Glazerr, Goat Girl, Dream Wife and Lydia Lunch. After a series of demos, and the growing legend of their intense live shows, full-band LP 'Rice, Pasta and Other Fillers' came out via Memorials of Distinction in 2016. Recorded in a garden shed, their lofi debut documents struggles with life, love and boredom, and showcases the scrapbook absurdism at Porridge Radio's core. In early 2019 Porridge Radio made an eagerly anticipated return with their first studio-recordings, the singles ‘Give / Take’ and ‘Don’t Ask Me Twice’. The two tracks offer the first glimpse of an increasingly refined sound, whilst maintaining the earnest vitality of their earlier work. The band's Secretly Canadian debut, Every Bad, is a culmination of what has been in their head for some time; the record they have been waiting for the means to record. The record is due 13 March 2020, & arrives full of grand, sweeping ambition – with vocals so urgent that it often feels like it is moved by compulsion rather than choice, with all the rawness of early Karen O, and influences as disparate as Charli XCX and The Cranberries.Tickets - £9 Adv / £11 Door (subject to availability)Ages 14+ (Under 18s accompanied by parent/guardian) Find out more...

  • Sun 06 Feb - Benjamin Francis Leftwich

    7:00 PM

Benjamin Francis LeftwichBenjamin Francis Leftwich is a singer/songwriter whose melancholic brand of acoustic folk-pop has drawn comparisons to the likes of Jose Gonzalez and Iron & Wine. Born in York in 1989 to South African and Australian parents, Leftwich lived a nomadic childhood, spending as much time in Sydney as in his native U.K. Inspired by Elliott Smith and Bruce Springsteen, he taught himself to play the guitar at age ten, and fronted indie pop outfit the Nicoles in his teens before embarking on a solo career. After recording his first EP, A Million Miles Out, in Southern France, he supported I Am Kloot, Fionn Regan, and Lisa Mitchell on tour, and attracted attention for his cover version of Arcade Fire's "Rebellion" on Dermot O'Leary's BBC R2 Saturday Sessions show. In 2011, his first single, "Pictures," taken from his second EP of the same name, was declared "The Hottest Record in the World Today" by influential Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe. Also in 2011, he released his debut full-length album, the Ian Grimble-produced Last Smoke Before the Snowstorm. A year later, he returned with the EP In the Open, followed by the 2014 single "Shine." In 2016, Leftwich delivered his sophomore studio album, After the Rain, featuring the single "Tilikum," recorded in the wake of his father's death from cancer. Leftwich issued an emotional acoustic cover of Placebo's "Pure Morning" the next year. Two singles, "Look Ma!" and "Gratitude," arrived in early 2019. ~ Jon O'Brien TICKETS: £16 Adv / £18 Door Ages 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian) Find out more...

The WoodentopsTaking punk's D.I.Y. ideals and applying them to stripped-down acoustic pop, the Woodentops achieved a great deal of critical success in the short time they were together. Formed in the early '80s in Northampton, England, the group consisted of Rolo McGinty (vocals, guitar), Frank de Freitas (bass), Simon Mawby (guitar), Benny Staples (drums), and Alice Thompson (keyboards). The band released its debut single, "Plenty," on Food Records; the record led to a contract with Rough Trade. Throughout 1985, the Woodentops released a series of singles, all written by McGinty, that began to attract an audience in the U.K. The group released its acclaimed debut album, Giant, in 1986. The following year, the Woodentops began experimenting with their sound, adding tougher guitars and electronics as McGinty became increasingly interesting in dance music. These changes were particularly evident in their live show, as shown by their 1987 live recording, Hypno Beat Live, recording during the group's American tour. (The tour also introduced new keyboard player Anne Stephenson, formerly of the Communards, who replaced Thompson.) Featuring the contributions of professional studio musicians Bernie Worrell and Doug Wimbish, among others, 1988's Wooden Foot Cops on the Highway continued the group's experimentations with rhythmic and sonic textures. While the Woodentops scored a minor radio hit in Los Angeles with "Stop This Car" and they developed a sizable following in Japan, extensive touring in 1991 and 1992 failed to widen their fan base, and at the end of 1992, the Woodentops broke up. Rolo McGinty worked in electronic music and sang with Gary Lucas' group Gods & Monsters, while Simon Mawby was briefly a member of the group House of Love. In 2006, McGinty assembled a new lineup of the Woodentops for a reunion tour; joining original members McGinty, Mawby, and de Freitas were drummer Paul Ashby, pianist Richard Thomas, and keyboardist Aine O'Keeffe. The Woodentops played live periodically over the next several years, and in 2014 they returned with their first new album in over 25 years, Granular Tales. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine TICKETS: £18 Adv / £20 Door (subject to availability) Ages 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian) Find out more...

Grant-Lee Phillips+ Special Guests TBA https://www.grantleephillips.com/https://www.facebook.com/grantleephil/ Many singer/songwriters are considered either strong vocalists who can also write or gifted composers who can sing a bit. Grant-Lee Phillips, on the other hand, is an exception, a tunesmith with an impressive command of both lyrics and melody who also possesses an instrument that's full of expressive character. Phillips' voice has a smoky texture paired with a honeyed smoothness, and his music is concise and graceful, matching the thoughtful romanticism of his verses. Phillips initially earned a significant reputation as the leader of the group Grant Lee Buffalo, who broke through with their debut album, 1993's Fuzzy. After going solo, he delivered a consistently strong body of work, with 2001's Mobilize, 2009's Little Moon, and 2016's The Narrows as standouts.
